Counting the Second Superpower

Authored by Michael Pate on April 19th, 2003 at 12:28 AM

This press release by Greenpeace, Momentum Builds for New UN Peace Resolution, contains the sentence “We’re part of what the New York Times has called the ‘new second superpower’: world opinion, and it is time our voices were listened to.” Another interesting sentence to me is this one: “32,015 of you have written to UN Ambassadors around the world.” According to the World POPClock Projection, the current world population is 6,287,562,382. Do the math and you find that UN Ambassadors received letters from .00005092 percentage of the World Population. I am sure the UN Ambassadors must have been just overwhelmed by the deluge. Oh, and by the way, for whatever reason, you won’t find this press release archive in the Greenpeace press section.
