Quorum Call

Authored by Michael Pate on May 23rd, 2003 at 11:56 PM

Some people, like Ed Cone, Josh Marshall, and Simon Phipps, think there is some kind of dark conspiracy that the media is ignoring some of the stories surrounding Texas Legislature Walkout from last week. My feeling is, if there is a concerted campaign, it is to protect those who walked out. We used to have something in this country called Majority Rule. Now that the Democratic Party has proved ineffectual in getting candidates elected in the last few election cycles, there are new tactics. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. But even when it does work, I think the perpetrators end up paying for it in the long run, anyway. My bet is that even if the Texas districts are not redrawn, the damage that the Texas Democratic Party has done with the relationship with their electorate by running out of the state and leaving important legislation to die on the vine will cost them at the polls next time. And personally, I don’t want to see the United States end up with one party rule like Mexico and Japan. And just for the record, having members of a body arrested and dragged back to the the chamber is nothing new, and has even been done by Democrats.

Actually, I wrote on my weblog last week that the Texas Dems should really go win more elections if they don't like the way the GOP runs things--unorthodox though the GOP behavior has been in calling for a redistricting not linked to a census...but you are nonetheless glossing over the story of DeLay's involvement, which seems pretty newsworthy to me.

Actually my comment on the lack of protest in the US wasn't meant to hint at a dark conspiracy over the Texas Walkout, it was a general comment - more in my blog.
