RSS Standards

Authored by Michael Pate on June 11th, 2003 at 5:06 PM

When I set this site up, I deliberately chose to setup a single RSS 2.0 feed. To do so, I went over to Mark Pilgrim’s site and acquired a copy of his RSS 2.0 template. As far as I knew, this met with Dave Winer’s approval. Then came this statement: “If they want respect for the formats and protocols they implement, they must do RSS exactly as UserLand does. The thing that Blogger and MT currently call RSS is not only not what UserLand does but it isn’t even an improvement over what UserLand does.” He later expanded his comments to add: “I read a piece yesterday about SixApart and their standards compliance. Interesting, but they do RSS in a funky way. I guess they are picky about which standards they support and how.” If Dave is talking about the new Movable Type RSS 2.0 Template, he certainly doesn’t make that clear. Dave may think that “not only not what” and “funky way” are sufficient explanation for what he means, but I am baffled. The thing is, unlike with Blogger, MT RSS feeds are not produced centrally. We all have the option to create a template (if the technology exists) to produce whatever feed we want. If Dave wants us to do one differently, he should either create a template for us to use or just tell us what is wrong with those we are using.
