Strategies for "Global Peace"

Authored by Michael Pate on June 22nd, 2003 at 1:54 PM

As the Bush administration sought global support for its attack on Iraq, the New York Times wrote, “The fracturing of the Western alliance over Iraq and the huge antiwar demonstrations around the world this weekend are reminders that there may still be two superpowers on the planet: the United States and world opinion.” But is that “superpower” with which President Bush appeared “eyeball to eyeball” on the eve of the Iraq war really a “tenacious new adversary” or just flash-in-the-pan protest against the inexorable advance of the Bush juggernaut? - Jeremy Brecher

The second option is to tear up the UN’s constitution, override the U.S. veto and seek to build a new global security system, against the wishes of the hegemon. This approach was unthinkable just four months ago. It may be irresistible today. - George Monbiot

Honestly, has history taught you nothing? Conflict in the world is unstoppable. Am I being pessimistic? No, just realistic. I can think of a way to limit the conflict though. Divide the Balkans into ethnic nations. Divide Iraq into three nations, Kurdistan, Shi'ite Iraq, and Sunni Iraq. Promote active migration of Kurds from Turkey to Kurdistan. If the Shi'ites are willing, allow Shi'ite majority areas to join with Iran. Do not destroy nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons allow for wars to be limited and never overly extended to disastrious proportions. No country would in their right mind attack a nuclear power and expect a clear victory. Disallow 3rd world countries the ability to gain these weapons, and disallow the nations who attempt to gain these nations at the expense of their nation's common good. The UN was, like the League of Nations, a quaint and useless voice in world politics to the greater nations of the world. The security council was however, a grand idea, had Canada been given a vote instead of France. The UN is a perfect model for humanitarian uses, but not for political or military pressure. "Those who prepare for war, keep the peace. Those who prepare for peace, fail to fight the wars they lose." SMM
