Irony in NYC

Authored by Michael Pate on July 24th, 2003 at 10:25 AM

35th: Incumbent James Davis will be challenged by Tony Herbert (an aide to several elected officials over the years), perhaps Abraham Wasserman (a Crown Heights resident who ran in 2001), and maybe the unknown Othniel Boaz Askew. “I’ve never heard of him. Or her,” Davis said. - Erik Enquist

According to John Ravitz, executive director of the New York City Board of Elections, Askew failed to meet a July 11 deadline to present a required candidate petition. In another e-mail to the Courier-Life reporter, Askew said he had collected 2,500 signatures — far more than the 900 needed. But he said “last-minute circumstances” arose and “human incompetency prevented the petitions from being delivered before midnight.” - Joshua Robin and Daryl Khan

Councilman James Davis, 41, a Democrat from Fort Greene and a former police officer, died from seven gunshots to his torso, rattled off by his assailant in the balcony at 2:08 p.m. The 31-year-old gunman, Othniel Askew, was shot five times in the chest and the arm by a police officer standing about 40 feet away on the floor of the chamber. - David Andreatta
