Stop the Meme

Authored by Michael Pate on August 5th, 2003 at 10:20 PM

It’s the latest incarnation of the Nazi meme - a word that rhymes with dream and describes an idea that spreads like a virus, regardless of whether it is true or false. In the age of the Internet, when anyone with a computer can download a peace song accompanied by a slide show of Bush and Hitler in similar poses, or print out lists of their alleged similarities, the Bush-equals-Hitler meme has spread like SARS. - Beth Gillin

There’s a certain fringe to the left that will always embarass the rest of us, and that’s the folks who reflexively compare George Bush to Hitler. I can’t stand this president, and I feel that America is worse off for having him in office - but there is no comparison between the two and even making that connection belittles the horror of Hitler’s reign. John Ashcroft on his worst day would be a moderate under Hitler. Let’s keep perspective people. - Oliver Willis

If you're going to call Bush a Nazi, show me the children with tattoos on their arms. Show me the stockpiles of emaciated corpses. Show me files cabinets full of memos detailing how Bush and Cheney plan on disposing of millions of dead American citizens killed with poisonous gas.

If you can't show me any of these things - and you can't - then stop calling the man a Nazi. Because when you say he's no different from Hitler, you are also saying that Hitler is no different from George Bush. And that means that Hitler's crimes were no worse than George Bush's "crimes." And whatever you think of what George Bush has done or might do, if you think any of it is the moral equivalent of the Holocaust, you are in effect saying the Holocaust really wasn't that bad.
