Mark is well known at this point for saying things in a rather non-polite way. When Dave points it out, I am not about to disagree with him. What I do disagree with is the way that Dave uses the opportunity to attack Sam. Dave is so convinced that IBM is manipulating everyone in order to wrest control of RSS away from everyone for some dark nefarious (yet undefined) purpose that he is jumping at shadows. I haven’t been able to follow everything going on either, but lots of people providing lots of input is not going to provide for a smooth creative process. Dave realized that when he worked on the various versions of RSS and made it a much more solitary process. The trick is to find the right balance, and we will only see whether that has been achieved, when the final product is complete.
Why do you see that as an attack. Sam does work for IBM, and Mark is his partner. And IBM hasn't said why they're rewriting the format and protocol of our business. There's nothing uncertain about any of that. Further, I am offended at the way they are treating Daniel, who is a good man, who has just been generous. What exactly have Sam and Mark contributed that allow them to judge Daniel?
Dave,
You and I agree that Mark is mistreating Daniel. I just don't see where Sam is doing it. Maybe I missed something.
What I saw as an attack was this pair of sentences:
The key word is "final." Later he will be able to claim that he never said it was an open process.
I think he was hedging with the word "final." Just because some decision at some time is reach offline doesn't mean it was made in bad faith. There may not have been any. And as for later, we don't know what Sam will claim later on since it hasn't happened yet.
And I am always uncomfortable when you start questioning people's credentials. You certainly have the right to do so, but I like to think of the blogosphere as a place where everyone can start a weblog and jump in. Who contributed more when to what is valid when making a personal evaluation, but it shouldn't preclude anyone from participating, either.
