Populists vs Democrats

Authored by Michael Pate on August 11th, 2003 at 4:07 PM

A lot of people think that Populists and Democrats are the same thing. After all, William Jennings Bryan was the candidate of both parties when he unsuccessfully ran against William McKinley in 1896. The Populists biggest achievement was changing the method of election for Senators.

After the 2000 election, many democrats have been calling for a change in the method of election of the President. Abolishing the Electoral College and holding national elections is probably the most popular idea. This is the sort of idea that Populists would approve of.

Another Populist idea is the concept of the Recall Election. It was first instituted in California in 1911. But just as strongly as one populist idea is supported, this one is being strongly denounced by people like Bill Maher and Larry Lessig.

I wonder what William Jennings Bryan would think?
