Robert Novak on Valerie Plame

Authored by Michael Pate on October 1st, 2003 at 7:29 PM

Wilson never worked for the CIA, but his wife, Valerie Plame, is an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction. Two senior administration officials told me Wilson’s wife suggested sending him to Niger to investigate the Italian report. The CIA says its counter-proliferation officials selected Wilson and asked his wife to contact him. “I will not answer any question about my wife,” Wilson told me. - July 14, 2003

Nobody in the Bush administration called me to leak this. In July I was interviewing a senior administration official on Ambassador Wilson’s report when he told me the trip was inspired by his wife, a CIA employee working on weapons of mass destruction. Another senior official told me the same thing. - September 29, 2003

During a long conversation with a senior administration official, I asked why Wilson was assigned the mission to Niger. He said Wilson had been sent by the CIA’s counterproliferation section at the suggestion of one of its employees, his wife. It was an offhand revelation from this official, who is no partisan gunslinger. When I called another official for confirmation, he said: “Oh, you know about it.” - October 1, 2003

I guess I am naive, but I am not what the controversy is supposed to be.

Let's see...just a hunch, but I'll bet that the controversy surrounds the fact that the two administrative officials who identifiied Plame in an "offhand revelation."

Whether it is politics or a mistake, the masked officials actions are far from okay.
