The Why of It

Why does Ali Abbas hate America so much? - Kynn Bartlett

This is, without a doubt, a terrible story. I, and you, and everyone else who reads the story should feel bad for Ali Abbas. And if he grows up to be a great Freedom Fighter against the west, I will certainly understand it. But that doesn’t address the issue.

Why do they hate America so much?

Are their bands of Iraqis going into battle with the name of Ali Abbas on their lips? Do suicide bombers thinking that “I am doing this in memory of Ali Abbas.” Does Saddam Hussein release statements demanding justice and/or vengeance for Ali Abbas? Is Saddam Hussein lying in bed at night planning how he can get even for Ali Abbas? How many buildings have been blown up for him? How many people have died for him? How many will die for him in the future? In the United States, at least, we tend to find for tangible reasons. Remeber the Alamo! Remember the Maine! Remember Peal Harbor! Remember 9/11!

When the 19 hijackers on September 11th made their plans, what were they fighting against? What were they dying for? Is Saddam Hussein that much more preferable to them than Ahmed Shalabi? To the average man on the street is Mullah Omar really that much better a leader than Harmad Karzai? Thousands of people are furious over what happened in California last week but as far as I know, no terrorist acts have been perpetrated. Nobody has jumped on an airplace with explosive-laden tennis shoes like Richard Reid. Nobody has attacked any ships or unleashed bioweapons or anything.

Ali Abbas may have a reason to hate us, but I haven’t heard anyone else who uses his reason as even an excuse.

I'm unhappy about the Arnold thing, but then, they grabbed it fair and square. And I, and most of the people in California, live in relative prosperity. Most of what the U.S. grabs around the world isn't "fair and square" and people aren't prosperous.

If Arnold came in with guns and bombs (a la a Terminator movie) and killed Gray Davis and took his place, and set up armed guards all over California preventing us from earning a living, you can be pretty sure there would be violent outbursts against it.

Not from me, though. I am a pacifist.

Let me think now... American Samoa. Guam. Puerto Rico. The Virgin Islands. I am trying to think of another example of the U.S. grabbing something.

Is that what this is about? Aso Hawleri is mad because someone is preventing him from earning a living?

You are fully entitled to your opinion, but I think the odds of Iraqis living in relative prosperity are much greater now than with Saddam Hussein.
