Manufacturing a Blog Backlash

Authored by Michael Pate on November 16th, 2003 at 9:31 PM

A year ago, I barely knew what blogs were. Within a few months, they’d become a staple of my daily media diet. Now I can’t live without them, but already I’m feeling betrayed — and a little bored. - Jennifer Howard

The really interesting part is that she then goes into a detailed analysis of an entire constellation of blogs that I never knew existed. She talks about them as if they are the center of the blogging universe. - Michael Feldman

Er, except that I haven’t ever heard of most of these blogs, which are nonetheless a big thing in their part of the sphere, I gather. There are more things in the blogosphere, Jennifer Howard, than are dreamt of in your articles… - Glenn Reynolds

She, then, rather ironically lists several blogs of which I’ve never heard and notes that they link and refer to one another in very cutesy ways that would be meaningless to casual readers, assuming that everyone “gets” the jokes. - James Joyner

Or maybe the writer just happens to like blogs whose authors tend to write cute, snarky, or sassy things. When i look at my blogroll i don’t see a lot of blogs that sound like those Jennifer Howard is writing about. - Craig Henry

As readers, we are trained that the media establishment is legit, that they more or less print truths. That trust relationship is turned on its ear in blog media. The reader who returns again and again to the source says to the publisher, “I trust you.” Breech that trust, and the feedback loop of comments and referring links and the like will relegate your blog to the long, long list of the unread. Credibility, point of view, integrity are the lifeblood of the blogger. For this reason, exactly, it is more than probable that bloggers will become the most influential commentators on all aspects of business and society. They can publish quickly to loyal and trusting readers. - Chris Shipley

The blogosphere is like a library in which books offering competing interpretations of things sit quietly beside each other until you open them up and the dialogue begins. - Ralph Luker

Note: Of the blogs listed above, three I had never heard of before today. And one other I don’t think I had ever visited.
