And So It Ends

Saddam Hussein

Soon the regime found itself in the throes of a deep, multifaceted crisis. For the first in many years Iraqis were protesting the presence of millions of Arab workers, mainly Egyptians, brought by Saddam to run the factories, construction projects and farms while Iraqis were away fighting Iran. Economic stagnation and fear of political backlash forced Saddam to initiate a privatization program, and offer some 70 state-owned enterprises for sale. Other market-oriented policies were adopted, although reluctantly, since Saddam did not want to lose control. Funds were slashed for development and imported Western goods. Saddam, desperately in need of cash, demanded that Kuwait and Saudi Arabia forgive debts incurred in the long battle against Iran. When Kuwait refused, Saddam accused his neighbor of stealing Iraq’s oil through wells pumped under the two countries’ border. Saying Kuwait was historically an Iraqi province, he invaded on Aug. 2, 1990. - Associated Press

Saddam Hussein and his sons must leave Iraq within 48 hours. Their refusal to do so will result in military conflict, commenced at a time of our choosing. - George W. Bush

The sons of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein were killed by U.S. troops in the northern city of Mosul after a tipster betrayed their hideout, the commander of U.S. ground forces in Iraq said Tuesday. - CNN

Coalition troops discovered Hussein hiding in a hole below the farm house, located in the town of Adwar, 10 miles from Tikrit. Military officials said that Hussein had put up no resistance and that not one shot had been fired in the operation. - Edward Wong and Kirk Semple

Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers
In a tomb…in bloom
Down in a hole and I don’t know if I can be saved
See my heart I decorate it like a grave
You don’t understand who they
Thought I was supposed to be
Look at me now a man
Who won’t let himself be
Down in a hole, feelin’ so small
Down in a hole, losin’ my soul
I’d like to fly,
But my wings have been so denied
Down in a hole and they’ve put all
The stones in their place
I’ve eaten the sun so my tongue
Has been burned of the taste
I have been guilty
Of kicking myself in the teeth - Alice in Chains
