Michael Moore on Wesley Clark

Authored by Michael Pate on January 26th, 2004 at 9:14 PM

As Supreme Allied Commander, General Clark commanded NATO forces during the war in Kosovo - and won the war in a way few thought possible: with air power alone, without a single allied combat death, while holding together the alliance of 19 nations, and isolating Milosevic from his allies. Milosevic’s brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing’ that had led to four wars - met its match in Kosovo. His attempt to drive a million Kosovars from their homes was crushed, and the loss led to the end for Milosevic, who was voted out of office and later handed over to be tried for war crimes. - Wesley Clark Biography

Well, I think what’s clear is that President Milosevic has to be persuaded that he is not going to be allowed to continue to seek a military solution to this problem. He has it in his mind and his advisors have it in their mind, I believe, that they can stall the international community, put us off balance, divide us, confuse us, befuddle us and somehow continue to conduct military and police operations with heavy weapons against these people in Kosovo. And that idea has to be taken out of their heads. - Wesley Clark

Yes, he must be stopped. But bombing the people of his country is exactly the wrong way to stop him. In fact, it has only strengthened him. There was a growing dissident movement in Yugoslavia before the war, and every letter I get from these brave souls tells me that the bombing has set back their struggle so incredibly far that they worry they will now be stuck with Milosevic for a long time. They are pleading with us to stop it. The bombing has made him a hero at a time when nearly half of the country was very unhappy with his leadership. We did not consult the anti-Milosevic movement in advance to see if they would like our help in the form of 10,000 bombing sorties. We just went off half-cocked on our own, and started killing the very people we were claiming to save. Anyone who remembers Vietnam knows that sordid logic and insanity. We have strengthened Milosevic and destroyed his opposition. Happy now? - Michael Moore

In the end, NATO achieved every one of its aims. With the air war intensifying, a ground invasion being prepared, and no other country to turn to for help, Milosevic in early June pulled his troops, police, and weaponry out of Kosovo. A NATO-led international peacekeeping force entered to establish order. Nearly a million Kosovars returned to their homes. Weakened by his defeat, Milosevic lost an election he had tried to rig in his favor. When he still refused to cede power, a student-led uprising did the job for him. Milosevic is now behind bars at The Hague and is being tried as a war criminal. Though Serbia and Kosovo are still struggling with the aftermath of ethnic conflict and autocratic leadership, they are now governed by democratically elected leaders eager for good relations with the West. All this was achieved at a remarkably slight cost, minimal destruction on the ground, no NATO casualties, and relatively few civilian deaths despite the use of some 23,000 bombs and missiles. - Wesley Clark

I have met Clark and spoken to him on a number of occasions, feeling him out on the issues but, more importantly, getting a sense of him as a human being. And I have to tell you I have found him to be the real deal, someone whom I’m convinced all of you would like, both as a person and as the individual leading this country. He is an honest, decent, honorable man who would be a breath of fresh air in the White House. He is clearly not a professional politician. He is clearly not from Park Avenue. And he is clearly the absolute best hope we have of defeating George W. Bush. - Michael Moore

I will tell you this about Michael Moore. I think he’s a man of conscience. I think he’s done a lot of great things for ordinary people, working people across America. And I’m very happy to have his support. - Wesley Clark

Michael Moore has a bizarre post on the front page of his web site. Bizarre because it is another of Moore’s rambling essays in support of Wesley Clark for president, but on the other hand if Moore is right then Clark is again lying (one way or the other) about that mysterious call he claims to have received after 9/11 telling him to blame the attacks on Iraq. - Brian Carnell

Michael Moore: a man who never without an excuse for keeping murdering tyrants in power. But now he’s supporting the man who bombed Milosevic into submission? How about an explanation, Mr Moore? - Andrew Sullivan

Welsley Clark is a amazing and I think he would win the election no problem he and his running mate George Bush will win for sure and his winning a purple star and silver heart is a sure fire win.
