Follow the Money

Authored by Michael Pate on January 30th, 2004 at 4:29 PM

One week later, Howard Dean celebrated his second stunning primary loss, in New Hampshire, by whacking Joe Trippi, the guy who believed when nobody else did, the guy who built this thing from nothing. The guy who would have killed himself for Howard was suddenly in the car with Kathy and the dog, driving fourteen hours back to the farm in Maryland. The dream was over. Because, in the end, it was Howard Dean who didn’t get it. - Lisa DePaulo

It’s not surprising to me, in a way, that weblogs have become such an important part of the early 2004 presidential campaign. I expect this campaign will take place more on the Web than it does on TV networks. That’s why I think candidates who use the Web to raise money for TV ads aren’t making enough of a bet on the Web, and are leaving the door open for those who do. But it must be hard to let go of a way of life. Politics has “always” worked that way, right? Anyway, it’s surprising when a vision comes true, no matter how strongly you felt it would. - Dave Winer

The Howard Dean presidential campaign announced over the weekend that the former Vermont governor will begin airing a new television ad in Texas calling into question the accomplishments of former Texas governor and current President George W. Bush. The new television ad, titled “Join Us,” will begin running Monday in Austin, and it invites Texans to join Dean’s grassroots campaign. - Charles Mahaleris

If we accept federal matching funds, our spending will be capped at $45 million — and the greatest grassroots movement in the history of presidential politics will be stopped from raising money almost immediately and will reach the spending limit well before the end of the primaries. We will not have any funding until the Democratic convention at the end of July. - Howard Dean

I suggested to Jim in a phone talk that they do something more creative with the money than buying television ads. Anything but giving the money to Viacom, GE, Disney, Fox, Time Warner. - Dave Winer

Howard Dean’s record campaign fund has dropped from $41 million to around $5 million, forcing him to cut costs as new front-runner John Kerry’s fund-raising fortunes rise. - Sharon Theimer

I heard on the radio last night that not only has Dean ditched Trippi as his campaign manager, but the staff are going to be “volunteering” for two weeks (i.e., no pay). Sounds not only like the campaign is at a loss in terms of strategy/what to do, but is in money trouble as well. - Steve Verdon

But the kicker, sure to anger Dean contributors, is buried later in the article: Joe Trippi “forfeited a salary as a campaign manager but collected commissions — said to be as high as 15 percent in some cases — based on advertising buys.”
- Taegan Goddard

As the Dean campaign started to raise serious money and support on the Internet last fall, it became common for the likes of me to go around trumpeting that this election might be for the Internet what the 1960 election was for television. In the wake of Iowa and New Hampshire, it seems evident that, once again, I’m too early with a prediction that may eventually prove accurate. If anything, this election may reconfirm the preeminent role of the idiot box in American politics, just as the Bush administration is demonstrating the power of plutocracy to an extent not witnessed since Karl Rove’s political hero William McKinley was elected. I have seen the past, and it still works. - John Perry Barlow

By the time Texas voters go to the polls, more than 20 other primaries and caucuses will have been held, including New York and California as part of the so-called Super Tuesday slate of primaries March 2. - Kelley Shannon

Dean is pulling ads, and even worse - Trippi seems to have fattened his pockets with 15% of the 35 million dollars they’ve wasted in this debacle. In all honesty, the Dean campaign appears to have been the Enron of politics. - Oliver Willis
