Torture Adjectives

Authored by Michael Pate on May 5th, 2004 at 3:26 PM

It’s torture when they do it. It’s abuse when our guys do it. - Xeni Jardin

What other adjectives have been used lately?

People in Iraq need to understand that I view these practices as abhorrent. What took place in that prison does not represent America that I know. - George W. Bush

It’s simply unacceptable that anyone would engage in the abuse of Iraqi prisoners - Condoleezza Rice

These are despicable acts and I know my colleagues at the Pentagon have a number of investigations underway. - Colin Powell

And while I don’t happen to think that Secretary Rumsfeld has distinguished himself during this time, he does offer a little perspective.

The pattern and practice of the Saddam Hussein regime was to do exactly what you said, to murder and torture. And the killing fields are filled with mass graves. And equating the two I think is a fundamental misunderstanding of what took place. - Donald Rumsfeld
