Mena wants to know what we use Movable Type for. I thought I would take a moment to run down the list.
One of my experiences is, I have tended to scatter installations across multiple domain names across multiple servers. So I don’t have quite the same problem that many others have experienced. But under the new licensing plan which said one installation on one server I guess that might have to change.
Third Superpower is composed of a single author and 3 weblogs. One generates the sidebar and another I use to use in conjunction Dean’s Allen Refer to blacklist referrer spam (although I don’t have that setup at the moment).
This counts then as one weblog with one author.
Pate Technology mainly exists because I bought the domain name a few years ago and wasn’t using when I explored the use of the virtual server. I thought it made for an appropriate homepage. This is a single installation.
This counts then as one weblog with one author.
Web Sites You Should Know was a domain name that my brother bought years ago and I talked him into giving to me rather than let it lapse. I intended to use for hosting websites for friends and where I didn’t think a whole domain was necessary. Currently, though, it hosts only one other person who is intending to move to two separate domains.
This counts then as two weblogs with two authors.
Marine Corps Musicians Association is an organization my father belongs to and I do the website for (although I am embarrased at the current state). My father and I bought are authors although he never works on it. Still, I hope to get him to. What you see is actually composed of 5 weblogs and there is a prototype for the new version making a sixth.
This counts then as one weblog with two authors.
ComicBookConventions.com has a prototype for a new DreamWeaver-free version in the works. It current has one author and me as designer rather than doing contect.
This counts then as one weblog with one author.
At work we have a sort of Intranet with 9 weblogs (although several of them only provide content for others) and 3 authors. And yes, I realize that this is crossing the line on commercial use. I am going to have to decide really soon whether to pay some commercial fee (although with an educational institution discount) or spend a lot of time learning one of the open-source alternatives. I am hoping the outcome of this discussion will solidify what we should do.
This counts then as three weblogs with three authors.
We also have our public site done with MT. It is a separate installation although I think we could certainly combine them into one with a commercial license. This one actually has 14 weblogs although many of them are projects in development that may never see the light of day. It also has 9 authors even though some of them are merely there because I was using MT’s built-in management capability to generate this page.
This counts then as three weblogs with three authors, I guess.
For me, it is not where we are today, though. I would love to see everyone within our organization doing their own Intranet weblog someday. And for the cost of $150.00, the commercial license was certainly not out of reach. But we have a lot more than 20 people. I would be perfectly willing to pay more, but I will have to lobby harder for the money. And I might not be able to get it.
Or I can start from scratch with something else and never have to worry about the issue again. I don’t want to do that, but it is not out of the question.
Now, I am going to be eager to read what other people have written. And see where we all go from here. And in the most positive way say that I wish for the sake of everyone that her post had been made before the new pricing scheme had been announced rather than now.
