Common Sense Choice

Authored by Michael Pate on July 10th, 2004 at 7:51 PM

Dave Winer has a list of 5 reasons why the Republican Party should choose a candidate other than George W. Bush as their nominee.

1. There were no WMDs in Iraq.

Actually, there are. Warheads containing sarin gas warheads were discovered in Iraq last month. Since some of the sites associated with the WMD program were looted, we may never know if and when the majority of the materials were destroyed.

2. The President knew that.

Actually, there is no evidence that George Bush knew the CIA estimates were wrong. But there was a liar exposed in the report. Joseph Wilson, who has told one story about his mission to Africa, actually had quite a different experience.

3. So did all the other members of the administration: Cheney, Powell, Rice, Rumsfeld, etc.

Actually, they were not lying since they were relying on the CIA. The only member of the Bush Administration that could be called a liar, and it is a contrived charge, is Clinton Appointee George Tenet.

4. They all lied, many of them still are lying.

Bill Clinton said prior to the invasion that he was absolutely convinced that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. Al Gore assured us that Saddam Hussein had stored secret supplies of WMD. John Edwards called Iraq both a grave and most serious and most imminent threat. And John Kerry said of his Senate vote, “I think Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction are a threat, and that’s why I voted to hold him accountable and to make certain that we disarm him.”

5. Bush gave a speech yesterday about how Kerry flip-flops, what a lot of nerve he has, on the same day a committee chaired by a Republican, with a Republican majority, confirmed that his pretense for war was a lie.

Apparently, Dave thinks George W. Bush is a liar. And Clinton. And Gore. And Kerry and Edwards. But because George W. Bush has the moral courage to stand by his earlier statements (or as Dave so eloquently puts it, he is “still lying”), which were true as he as he knew, and John Kerry is apparently hoping everyone will forget his (note the broken links), Dave uses this as the basis to support John Kerry. It is rather ironic that the same people who call George Bush a liar are forced to support someone they believe to be a liar.

For someone who actually would make use of “common sense,” George W. Bush would seem to be the only choice.
