The Confusion Factor

Authored by Michael Pate on September 17th, 2004 at 4:13 PM

Before the vote, John Kerry seemed to have a clear position.

I think that I have the ability, either way, to make substantive arguments for what I’m doing. My policy has been clear here. My direction has been clear. There’s no change in my attitude about the weapons. - John Kerry

As well as after the vote.

Whichever way I voted, people will see it. I couldn’t live with myself, given my own experience, if I decided I was going to put people there for some kind of political rationale. - John Kerry

Now some people are confused.

You said, Senator Kerry, a while back, not that long ago — and I assume you meant all of the things you’re talking about now, but you said knowing what you know now, which would include just what you’ve been talking about, you would have still voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq, which doesn’t make any sense to me. - Don Imus

Some people are not.

If the election were held today, John Kerry would lose by between 88 and 120 electoral votes. The reason is simple: The central vulnerability of this president — the central issue of this campaign — is the Iraq war. And Kerry has nothing left to say. Why? Because, until now, he has said everything conceivable regarding Iraq. Having taken every possible position on the war, there is nothing he can say now that is even remotely credible. - Charles Krauthammer

I found a quote the other day that sums up this election quite well (although it might be a bit harder on Mr. Kerry than I would be).

Ultimately, this election persists in becoming an intelligence test for the American people. It’s not only on policy matters, either. Do we still have the moral discernment to detect the difference between a total fake and a flawed but honorable and competent human being? - Allen
