Israel and John Kerry

Authored by Michael Pate on October 31st, 2004 at 3:23 PM

I think it would be quite bizarre if, as a result of an attack on us by these insane religious extremists, we were to somehow weaken our support for Israel and therefore appear to reward a different group of people who back terrorism. - Richard Holbrooke

For countless American Jews, loyalty to the Democratic ticket is as automatic as breathing. The roots of that loyalty run deep. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, waves of Jewish immigrants from Europe, where the most anti-Semitic elements of society were often the most conservative, brought with them an intense aversion to right-wing politics - and an appreciation for the left, which they associated with emancipation and equality. Those attitudes were intensified during World War II, when the most lethal enemy in Jewish history was ultimately destroyed by an alliance led by a liberal Democrat named Franklin Roosevelt. But America in 2004 is very different from the America of 50 or 100 years ago. - Jeff Jacoby

It is not our place to take sides. - Howard Dean

With Iraq no threat, why invade a sovereign country? The answer: President Bush’s policy to secure Israel. - Fritz Hollings

One of the things I’ve noticed is the Israel lobby - the treatment of Israel as the 51st state, sort of a swing state. - Chris Heinz

While more than half of those polled elsewhere stated their attitude toward the U.S. had deteriorated, most respondents in Israel said their opinion had improved, and 76 percent said the U.S. contributed to peace in the world. Among Israelis polled, 50 percent said they would like to see George Bush reelected, with only 24 percent for Kerry. - Haaretz

According to the results of a post-debate poll, 80 percent of likely American Muslim voters say they plan to vote for Sen. John Kerry on November 2. The poll, conducted by the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) following the third presidential debate, also indicates that 11 percent of Muslim voters favor Ralph Nader and just two percent say they will vote to re-elect President Bush. Only four percent of the Muslim voters said they are still undecided. - CAIR

Anti-Semitism, under the mask of anti-Zionism and in its own right, resurfaced with a vengeance in a supranational, multicultural, pluralistic, antiracist Europe. There is a general consensus among researchers that not since 1945 has there been such a level of concern, anxiety, even depression among Europe’s Jews and communities as we witness today. The dream-Europe of the new millennium is already beginning to look like a fading mirage. - Robert Wistrich

We’d have gone to war with allies in a way that the American people weren’t carrying the burden. And the entire world would have understood why we were doing it. - John Kerry

In what currency, therefore, would we pay the rest of the world in exchange for their support in places such as Iraq? The answer is obvious: giving in to them on Israel. - Charles Krauthammer

He’d put more pressure on Israel, Syria, Saudi Arabia above all. - Richard Holbrooke
